April 18

From the Diary of Laura Patton:

They are finally on their way here. Apparently, every one of them decided to come.

“That’s good news, right?” I asked Jackson before bed. “I mean, they all trust their MT enough to go with them.”

“I don’t know, Laura,” he said, looking a bit glum. “You’ve heard the MT talk about how some of these people are just plain bad. What if they are just trying to get here to take what we have built? I have heard that some of the Villagers are worried that’s the case.”

“That’s why you and your people will be on the Grade waiting for them. You’ll search them, and then we will bus them all down. What do you think could go wrong?”

“Any one of a million things could happen. Are you still talking to Kendall every afternoon?”

“Yeah, I am. He’s not a bad guy. He might not be the most educated, but he’s definitely smart. We can work with that. And I think he trusts me. I don’t know if I would if I was in his place, but it gives us an advantage.”

“He probably already has a crush on you like half the guys here do,” he said.

“Jealous much?” I teased.

“Of course,” he said. “I have the most brilliant, sexy woman in the world. Why wouldn’t they be in love with you?”

“Umm, maybe this big belly?” I said.

“You mean that tiny little bump? I look more pregnant than you do, darlin’,” he said.

I rubbed his lean stomach and abs he had from working out daily, but that didn’t stop me from teasing him some more. “Well, you don’t have to keep going to Annie’s kitchen just to suck up to her, and you certainly don’t have to eat everything she puts in front of you.”

He held onto either side of my face, just like he did that first time he kissed me that day in the forest, and it felt like our first time, all over again. Sometimes when he walks into a room I get butterflies, not only in my stomach. Much of the time they run a little lower than that.

I can’t help wondering if I have been given too much happiness. With all of the suffering, I have more family alive than almost anyone, an incredible man I am going to marry, and an entire village full of people who love me. I love them, too. Yeah, I’ve gone through a lot of horrific events, but I feel like I am on the other side of it now. No, I am not naïve enough to believe that we aren’t still going to suffer from the negative consequences of the Last War, but I think that we can handle what comes our way now.

Knock wood! Well, I didn’t say I lost my superstitiousness.
